ECE has a certified welding engineer (European Welding Engineering Degree) and qualified welding examiner on staff. We are trained to perform requisite welding approvals, such as welding procedure specifications (WPS) and welding personnel qualifications (welder and welding operator).

Welding Inspection and Supervision

ECE Staff is qualified to inspect and supervise the majority of your welding activities. Depending on either your clients’ requirements or as part of the selected CE or Pi Marking assessment and approval procedures, welding activities may require supervision by an external agency (see also construction surveillance). We provide services related to welding activities, keeping in mind the importance of certification and compliance, as well as customer satisfaction.

Welding inspections and supervision are a great opportunity for us to add value to your organization. Many of our clients find our technical expertise invaluable due to our keen understanding of the issues and the balance between customer satisfaction, engineering requirements, and the need to obtain certifications and compliances.

For instance, it is important to realize that welding is a process, which should be considered during design input assessments (e.g. as part of risk assessments and HAZOP studies). We provide support with risk and HAZOP studies, and can effectively support you with such tasks.

Welding Requirements and its Principle Impacts

The importance of welding and compliance to the applicable codes and requirements is a quality we take seriously. We realize not every weld must have the quality of a hygienic weld, hence preventing residual product in the piping system after cleaning. Most acceptance criteria for welding depends on design requirements, the service conditions and the scope and frequency of inspections.

Usually, the approval of welding procedures and welder is done on the basis of the manufacturer’s product scope and/or according to project applications. Still, meeting or exceeding the requirements of the code(s) applied to the approval process (e.g. ASME Sect IX, EN 288, ISO 9606-5, etc.) is a fundamental requirement.

If a manufacturer offers products globally, including Europe, often additional requirements or complimentary requirements to the (e.g.) ASME Code are to be considered or even required.

Example:
According to the European Law for Pressure Equipment (Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 97/23/EC), a manufacturer is required to determine and suggest the inspection scope and intervals of their product. The operator of the equipment is required to determine the potential risk of the equipment when operated in their facility (see Compliance & Potential Risk). The risk is evaluated under close consideration of the applicable codes and standards.

The welding procedure and welder approval requirements must be outlined in the CE Technical File and therefore are an essential part of the potential risk assessment. The operator’s local inspection authority will consider the OEM’s suggested inspection scope and intervals for his approval. In the event the product is being operated in a country which is not familiar with the ASME Code, the additional requirements will provide greater support for acceptance of long uninterrupted operating periods without inspections. This leaves the operator in a position to operate equipment with high efficiency and return of investment.
